How to Make Trance Like Anjunabeats & Enhanced — Building a Progressive Trance Track in Real Time

In this live electronic music tutorial (episode 347 of the We Make Dance Music series), Mikas produces a progressive trance track in real time, in the style of labels like Anjunabeats and Enhanced. The whole track is built from scratch inside Logic Pro X — his DAW of choice — and then converted into Ableton Live and FL Studio templates so producers on any platform can follow along. The result is a 132 BPM cut in A minor, built around classic trance stabs, leads and pads.

What you’ll learn

  • How to start a trance track from a blank session in Logic Pro X
  • Choosing core sound sources: Sylenth1, Logic’s Alchemy synth, and drum machines
  • Laying down a four-bar lead and stab idea as the foundation of the track
  • Why you don’t need to obsess over the “perfect” preset when sketching ideas
  • Shaping pads and using EQ to cut the low end so they sit cleanly in the mix
  • Building up enough parts to commit to a full arrangement

1. Set up the session and load your core instruments

Mikas starts in Logic Pro X with a clean session and pulls in his go-to trance tools. He loads Sylenth1 — a genuine classic for this genre — alongside Logic Pro X’s built-in Alchemy synth, plus a couple of drum machines including a big-room style drum machine and a TR-style drum machine for the kit. These few instruments are all you need to begin sketching a trance idea.

2. Establish the main idea every four bars

With the instruments loaded, he gets a repeating idea going so that at least every four bars the lead and main hook restate themselves. This four-bar loop becomes the anchor of the track — the lead and the plucked stabs that drive the energy. Getting this core phrase looping early gives you something to build everything else around.

3. Explore sounds instead of chasing the perfect preset

Rather than spending time hunting for the ideal preset, Mikas dives straight in and explores. He’s after an old-school, classic trance character, and he’s not precious about which preset he starts from. The lesson here is to commit to a sound that points in the right direction and shape it as you go, instead of stalling on preset selection.

4. Dial in the stabs and lead

The track leans on bright trance stabs and a strong lead line — the signature top-line elements of the Anjunabeats and Enhanced sound. He auditions the plucks and lead, confirms they work together, and locks them in as the melodic backbone of the arrangement.

5. Shape the pad and pull it further back

Next he turns to the pad, deciding it should sit much further back in the mix to create depth behind the lead. A pad that’s too forward will clutter the arrangement, so pushing it back lets the lead and stabs stay in front while the pad fills out the harmonic bed.

6. EQ the low end out of the pad

To keep the mix clean, Mikas cuts the low end out of the pad with EQ, removing the bass frequencies it doesn’t need. This frees up room for the kick and bassline to own the bottom end, which is essential for the punchy, clear low end that defines a good trance mix. Cutting unnecessary lows from non-bass elements is one of the quickest ways to tidy up a busy arrangement.

7. Build out the parts and commit to a full track

With the lead, stabs, drums and a cleaned-up pad in place, he expands on the idea and adds a few more elements. At this point there are more than enough parts to turn the sketch into a complete trance track — the foundation is set, and the rest is arrangement and refinement.
